Just an update on what I’ve been up to lately. This morning I was at a center for apprentices. A few Peace Corps volunteers help out with random work at this place. This center includes apprentices for carpentry, metal work, tailoring, mechanics, and a few other things. Well, today was the ceremony for the graduating class. It was cool and I got to present a certificate to one of the graduating students.
This afternoon I was with my friend Daniel. He is a bee farmer and so I was helping him collect honey from his hives. I also took some pictures of him which we are going to use for a brochure to help market his business.
Yesterday I was in a town called Sokode. I believe it is suppose to be the second biggest city in Togo, but don’t quote me on that. I was visiting an NGO called Espoir Vie Togo. They are mainly an association helping people living with HIV. I’m helping put together a national camp for kids affected by HIV, so I had to check in with them because they’ll be sending a few kids from their association to the camp.
Tuesday I was at Sotouboua’s hospital helping out with the weekly vaccinations and baby weighing session. With the system they have here, mothers are supposed to come to the hospital on a monthly basis with their children under two years old. We then track these kids’ weight and this lets us know if the kids are malnourished or not. We also give vaccinations in the same sessions.
The weekend past I was down in a town called Atakpame. I helped out with a workshop for local NGOs. It went over all sorts of things, such as basic accounting to creating a presence online. I mainly helped with logistical stuff, like making sure everyone was where they were supposed to be.
Earlier that week I was back in Sotouboua in a preparatory meeting for a training workshop that we’ll be having in Sotouboua next month. It’ll be for health workers in my town. I’m kinda nervous about this thing because I’m the one running it and it is my first project funded by USAID. But so far it seems to be going well.
And thats it.
Hey Martin!
Great work. I like seeing what you’re up to and what you’re learning through all your travels. Here is a site that may be of interest for a new way to get information to those who need it; social networking for remote areas.
Best wishes to you, Lorna
